Mixed results from G8
By Chris Occhiuzzi The G8 Summit provided mixed results for business in Huntsville. Some shopkeepers and their employees saw business boom, while others were left wondering where all the people were. The Springhill Fresh Water Company was having a good week. Of course, being the official provider of bottled water at the G8 certainly helped. "Those bottles went with the leaders as a souvenir," says Springhill's owner/operator Ken Inglis, who also chairs the Savour Muskoka board of directors. The water was a hit according to Inglis, as all the souvenir bottles were swept away. "It was the only thing that they did not have left over," says Inglis, who never expected to see his product promoted outside of Muskoka. "I was so pleased to be pulling up pictures from different areas that show my water in front of the world leaders. It's sort of like you're dreaming that it's actually happening to you or your company, but when I see the pictures, it reinforces that yes, we did it." At One Stop General Store, the mood was quite upbeat. Although the majority of their business was from visiting police officers, they were very happy with the weekend. "The G8 was good for us. Thorpe resigns from Muskoka Futures
By Karen Wehrstein After 11 and a half years as the general manager of Muskoka Futures, Christopher Thorpe has left his position. "The decision was on my mind for some time," says Thorpe, whose resignation came into effect on July 9. His plans are to concentrate more on his art - he practices sketching every day and enjoys sculpture as well as other media - while taking on the occasional development project on a freelance basis. He also has ideas for projects to help other artists. "There are so many things I want to do in life," he says. "I need some time to figure out precisely the type of thing that it's feasible to be doing from an arts project standpoint. But I look forward to taking on the occasional freelance project, as I know I'm going to start really missing the people I've been working for the last dozen years or so. I'd like to keep my hand in." Thorpe came to Muskoka with close to 20 years experience in initiative regional economic development programs, including that which transformed Lunenberg, Nova Scotia from a fishing community to a world heritage site with greatly expanded tourism and hitech sectors. During his tenure at Muskoka Futures, Thorpe was instrumental in sparking such influential programs as the Arts Council of THORPE - p. 12
